Free admission to national parks Saturday

Written by  Friday, 08 June 2012 12:09

The United States National Park service and the US Fish and Wildlife Service will waive their entrance fees Saturday in observance of National Get Outdoors Day.

In Southeast Georgia that includes such parks as Fort Fredrica National Monument on St. Simons Island, Cumberland Island National Seashore and Fort Pulaski National Monument near Savannah. It also includes the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

The event is one of five times through the year when entrance to the national parks is free.

Also, Coca-Cola is sponsoring a $100,000 online contest to find "America's Favorite Park." Splash in the Boro is one of the parks on the list. Either visit the website https://apps.facebook.com/coca-colaparks/ to vote online or be credited with 100 votes each time a visitor "checks-in" to Splash using FourSquare. Just click "Vote" at the top of the page, type "Statesboro" on the "Search for Park" page and look for the link to Splash.

The top three vote-getting parks will receive a grant for $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively. In addition, Coca-Cola will award a "wild-card" grant for $15,000, the winner of which will randomly selected from the number 4 - 25 vote-getting parks.
